AKRON, Ohio– A total of 76 University of Akron student-athletes were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society on Sunday evening during the UA Department of Athletics' annual Zippy Awards Banquet.
Â
Chi Alpha Sigma is a non-profit organization that was established to recognize college student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition.
Â
The organization was founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. His goal was to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.
Â
Through the efforts of Akron assistant volleyball coach Jordan Armstrong, Dr. Laura Richardson (Faculty Senate Athletics Committee/Sport Science & Wellness Education), Dr. Matthew Juravich (Faculty Athletics Representative/Sport Science & Wellness Education), and Anne Jorgensen (Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Academic Services), Akron applied for membership during the Spring of 2019.
Â
Each Zip received a Chi Alpha Sigma pin and certificate of induction.
Â
To be eligible for Chi Alpha Sigma, student-athletes must attend a four-year accredited college or university that is a member of the NCAA or NAIA.
