AKRON, Ohio– The Akron softball team was swept for the first time in the 2019 Mid-American Conference season as Ohio dropped the Zips, 9-1 and 13-5, in doubleheader MACtion on Saturday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field.Â
Â
Game one was all Ohio as the Zips were held to one hit en route to the Bobcats 9-1 victory.Â
Â
Akron's lone hit was a big one however as senior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) lifted her fourth home run of the season to left field to cut into Ohio's lead, 2-1.Â
Â
The Bobcats went on to score seven additional runs in the third and fourth inning as the contest ended in the fifth inning due to the NCAA run rule.Â
Â
The fans in attendance of part two of the days twinbill saw an offensive show at Lee Jackson Field. The Zips and Bobcats combined 24 hits, but Ohio outhit Akron, 15-9.Â
Â
After Ohio again scored the first two runs in the contest in the top of the first inning, Akron cut the deficit back down to one run in their first at-bats of the game. Lakins singled up the middle with junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio) on second base. The speedy left fielder rounded third and headed home for the score.Â
Â
Ohio's offense continued in the second inning and scored six runs to extend its lead to 8-1.Â
Â
Now playing from behind by, the Zips put their foot on the offensive pedal with three more runs in the second inning. With one swing of the bat, redshirt senior Kimberly Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit an opposite field two-run home run to the right field. Later in the inning, sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio) grounded out to second base but it allowed freshman Amaya Smith (St. Clairsville, Ohio) to score from third.Â
Â
The Bobcats outscored the Zips 5-to-1 from the third inning on before the contest ended in the fifth inning for the second time in as many games.Â
Â
Akron needed to two score runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to continued playing. With two outs, sophomore Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Ohio) singled through the right side and drove home senior Sabria Bruton (Palmetto, Fla.) from second base. The Zips then had runners at first and second, but junior Madison Carter (Newnan, Ga.) was thrown out at third base trying to steal and ended the game.Â
Â
The Zips are scheduled to compete in a midweek non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17, when the Akron travels back to western New York to take on Niagara. The twinbill between the Zips and Purple Eagles is slated to start at 3 p.m.
