Gross Set to Compete at 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships

AKRON, Ohio – Freshman Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.) will represent the University of Akron at the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships, March 8-9, at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W. Va.
Gross will be competing in smallbore, which takes place on Friday, March 8, beginning at 9:45 a.m. The freshman will compete in the second relay which is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., while individual finals are slated to start at 3:30 p.m. The air rifle competition will take place all day, Saturday, March 9 beginning at 9:45 a.m.
"I can't really say how proud I am of this young man and all he has accomplished in this, his first year, as an Akron athlete," said head coach Newt Engle.
The last time Akron sent a student-athlete to the NCAA Rifle Championships was in 2015 when Matt Chezem earned an individual invitation in air rifle.
Akron finished the seasoned ranked No. 13. Only the nation's top eight teams qualified to compete at the championships, including TCU, Kentucky, Airforce, West Virginia, Murray State, Navy, Alaska Fairbanks and Army. The Zips placed fourth overall at the Great America Rifle Championships, Feb. 22-23, topping NCAA Championship qualifying Army and Navy.
At the GARC Championships, Gross finished third overall in smallbore. He fired a season-high tying score of 585 to qualify for finals. In the thrilling final round, Gross fired the third best score of 441.8.
Gross is averaging a team-best average of 580.2 in smallbore competition this season. His average also ranks No. 21 nationally.
At the GARC Awards Banquet on Thursday, Feb. 21, Gross was named to the All-GARC Second Team, while the entire Akron rifle team was honored with the GARC Sportsmanship award.
