AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's volleyball program announced its 2019 Summer Camp Schedule on Tuesday.
After another successful summer of camps in 2018, the Zips are offering another great volleyball experience with camps held on the campus of the University of Akron at James A. Rhodes Arena.
"We're excited to offer a variety of camps and clinics this summer, to help prepare players of every level to improve for their school season! Our camp staff does a great job of providing high quality and personalized instruction using the same techniques, drills, and environment that we use to train the Zips," said head coach Tom Hanna.
Kicking off the 2019 camp season will be the Zips Volleyball Day Camp. Sessions consist of three hours of instruction with skill development, technique improvement, drills, competitions and games. Campers can attend one or both sessions each day. On June 3, the camp will be focused on setting and attacking, while the camp on June 4, will concentrate on ball control and serving in the first session along with drills and games in the second session. Campers, entering grades 6 – 12, can attend a full day of camp for $60 or individual sessions for $35 each. The first session will run from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by the second session which runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., on both days.
Taking place July 8-10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the Zips Volleyball Skills Camp. This camp will teach serving, ball control, setting, attacking, blocking and game play in a drill and competitive structure. Campers will be divided based on age and skill level in order to maximize improvement. The cost of the skills camp is $215 per camper and open to grades 5-9.
The Zips Volleyball Individual Skill Clinics will take place, July 8-10 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The specialized skill specific clinics will focus on developing and refining each skill through both drills and competitions. New this year, the second hour of each clinic will emphasize each specific skill within playing scenarios and games. The clinic on July 8 will focus on attacking, while ball control will be covered on July 9, and July 10 will focus on setting and serving. Campers, entering grades 5-12, can attend the individual skill clinics for $30 per clinic.
From July 12-14, Akron will host its advanced camp, which is structured as a high-level intensive training for those entering grades 8-12, as well as graduated seniors entering their freshman year of college. Training will cover the six major volleyball skills as well as competitive components of gameplay in a collegiate emulated culture. Campers will be divided based on skill level to maximize individual growth. The cost for the overnight option is for $310, while campers also have the option to commute for $265.
The final camp of the summer, the Scholastic Prep Camp, will take place, July 29-30, spanning from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The camp is designed as a "rust-buster" to help prepare campers for their upcoming school tryouts. The focus will be on the repetition of skills along with interactive games and competitions. The camp costs $90 for both days or $50 for a single day.
Head coach Tom Hanna is entering his fifth season with the Zips. Returning 12 student-athletes, the Zips plan to use the 2018 season, which produced multiple MAC Player of the Week Honors, as well as nine Academic All-MAC honorees, and a Google Cloud Academic All-District 1st Team Selection, as a springboard into 2019. Assisting Hanna for the camps is his assistant coach Jordan Armstrong who is entering his fourth season at Akron.
A full list of dates, camp descriptions and registration information can be found here. Camp space is limited for each camp and clinic. All remaining balances for camps are due by June 28. Walkup registration will be accommodated if space is available.
Please contact Jordan Armstrong at jarmstrong@uakron.edu or by calling 330-972-7435 with any questions regarding the camps.
