Akron Completes 50th Furman Intercollegiate 17th Overall, Grayson Leads Zips

Greenville, S.C. – The Akron men's golf team completed the 50th Furman Intercollegiate with a 301 (+17) final round score en route to a 307-293-301 – 901 (+49) score to finish 17th overall on Sunday.
Senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) led the Zips' scoring with an even-par final round score. He carded 10 pars, four birdies and four bogeys. Grayson placed 46th overall tied with a 78-72-71 – 221 (+8) tournament total. Grayson climbed 14 positions on the player's board.
Sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden) and junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) recorded the day's second best 18-hole roundsl as both fired 76 (+5) scores. Sunden finished the 54-hole tournament with 76-72-76 – 224 (+11), ranking tied at 58th overall. He was the Zips second leading scorer.
McFarland finished fourth overall in scoring for Akron with a 78-75-76 – 229 (+16). He tied for the 88th position.
Freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) rounded out the Zips' scoring with 78 (+7) and 79 (+8) scores, respectively. Puente finished third in scoring for Akron and tied for 76th overall with a 75-74-78 – 227 (+14) ledger, while Bayerl was 108th overall with a 79-76-79 – 234 (+21) tally.
Coastal Carolina held on to win the team title over the 21-team field with a 7-under par 282-279-284 – 845 team total. Davidson earned runner-up with a 3-under 283-284-282 - 849 performance.
Individually, Furman's Kellen Harper topped the leaderboard with a 70-63-72 - 205 (-8) effort, while Wes Artac from Coastal Carolina earned runner-up with a 69-64-73 - 206 (-7) total.
Akron will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9, at White Manor Golf Course for the Villanova Intercollegiate in Malvern, Pa.
