AKRON – The Akron men's golf team traveled to Greenville, S.C. for the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate on Friday-Monday, March 22-24, hosted by Furman University.

"We have had several guys play great this spring, and we have struggled as well," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "It isn't for lack of preparation or talent. It is playing like we are capable of playing. We have had success at the Furman Intercollegiate and it is a tourney we love coming to. I am looking forward to getting this tournament going and playing the way I know we all can play."

The 54-hole event will be played at Furman University Golf Course, a par 71 course that spans 6,994 yards. Fans can follow the three-day event via GolfStat Live Scoring.

Akron is the only Mid-American Conference member to participate in the 21-team field that includes host Furman, Akron, Charleston, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Dartmouth, Davidson, Francis Marion, Georgia State, High Point, Marshall, Minnesota, Presbyterian, Samford, USC Aiken, USC Upstate, Virginia Tech, Wichita State, Winthrop, Wofford and Yale.

The Zips' starting five includes senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), and sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden), redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) and freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain).Â

Tee times for the first two rounds are set, as Akron opens the tournament from the No. 10 tee, beginning at 1:10 p.m. ET on Friday. Sunden will get Akron started while Puente (1:20), Bayerl (1:30), McFarland (1:40), and Grayson (1:50) follow.

Last year, Akron men's golf team climbed six spots and posted a 298 (+10) final round to complete the 54-hole event 10th overall with 305-290-298 – 893 (+29) at the Furman University Golf Course, a par 72 course that spans 7,031 yards.

Grayson finished tied for sixth place overall after leading the Zips' scoring with a 3-under par 213 tournament total. Grayson fired a final round 70 (-2) and posted rounds of 69 (-3) and 74 (+2). He used nine pars and six birdies for the 2-under ledger and completed the tournament with 28 pars and a second-best 15 birdies.

Finishing tied for 76th overall was Sunden. He followed an even-par second round and plus-6 first round with an 80 (+8) showing to finish with a 230 (+14) scorecard. Rounding out the Zips' scoring was McFarland with a 233 (+17) score on rounds of 78 (+6), 75 (+3), and 80 (+8).

North Florida won the team title with a 17-under par 278-285-284 – 847 score, while the Ospreys swept top honors as Phillip Knowles earned medalist 66-71-70 – 207 (-9) and Andrew Alligood was runner-up 70-72-68 – 210 (-6).Â
