AKRON – The Akron men's golf team fired a 307 (+23) team score at the first round of the Furman Intercollegiate on Friday as freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) led the way with a 75 (+4) opening round.

Puente currently stands tied for 52^nd overall at the 54-hole event which is being played at the Furman University Golf Course, a par 71 course that spans 6,994 yards. He carded 11 pars and two birdies to lead the Zips to 15^th overall in the team scoring.

Sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden) followed in scoring for Akron with a 76 (+5) ledger, while senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) and junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) recorded 78 (+7) scores.

Redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) rounded out the scoring with a 79 (+8) tally.

Virginia Tech currently leads the team scoring with a 3-under par 281, followed by Coastal Carolina 282 (-2) and Davidson 283 (-1). The player leaderboard has a four-way tie for the top spot at 2-under par, and an eight-way stalemate at 1-under.

Tee times for round two are set, as Akron opens from the No. 1 tee, beginning at 9:10 p.m. ET on Friday. Bayerl will get Akron started while McFarland (9:20), Grayson (9:30), Sunden (9:40), and Puente (9:50) follow.
