Akron Dominates On Both Ends Of The Field To Secure A 2-0 Shutout Victory Over Miami

AKRON, Ohio– For a full 90 minutes of play, the Akron women's soccer team dominated on both ends of the field against Miami as a pair of goals by sophomore's Sydney Worthy (Groveport, Ohio) and Kayleigh Penton (Vermilion, Ohio), along with a a clean sheet in the net for freshman Libby Harper (Hatfield, England), secured a 2-0 shutout victory over the RedHawks on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.
With the conference victory, the Zips point total stands at six on the season, while improving its MAC record to 2-2-0 and overall record to 5-7-0. Miami fell to 2-2-0 inside league play and 3-8-0 overall on the season.
For the second consecutive Sunday match, Worthy notched a goal and game-winning tally for the Akron offense. At the 31:39 mark of the first half, the Zips were awarded a corner kick opportunity and freshman Anya Donelan (Warrington, England) trotted to the near corner of the field. The Zips midfielder served the ball just outside the top of the goalie box where Worthy leaped into the air and headed the ball into the right side of the net for the lead. Donelan tallied her second assist of the season on the play.
Akron continued to push the ball forward in the second half of the match despite its 1-0 advantage. The Zips' aggressive style of play paid off in the 56' of the contest as Penton scored the first goal of her Akron career. After UA put the ball into play on a corner kick, the ball bounced around inside the box before junior Abigail Brown (Batavia, Ohio) cleared it out wide to Penton. From outside of the box on the right-hand side, Penton fired a laser on goal that the RedHawks keeper attempted to clear over the crossbar but it landed inside the net for the score. On the play, Brown garnered her first assist of the 2019 campaign.
On the afternoon, the Zips tallied a season-high 18 shots en route to the victory along with a campaign-high nine shots on goal. Ten Akron players found themselves in the box score recording at least one shot. Penton directed the offensive attack for Akron with a game-high four shots. Worthy went 3-for-3 in shots on goal while Donelan, junior Annamarie Alfery (Cheswick, Pa.), and freshman Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland) rounded out the Akron players with a multi-shot (2) performance.
Harper posted her third shutout of the season in the net for Akron and the fourth overall for the Zips. The freshman keeper made three saves, increased her season total to 20, and improved her record to 4-5-0 in 1,117 minutes of action.
In the first half alone, the Zips offensive unit garnered eight shots with three coming on goal.
Following the first shot of the match by Miami (1:06), Akron rattled off six straight shot attempts with three of the six shots being pulled in for s save.
Akron controlled possession of the ball well in the second half keeping the ball out of the RedHawks offensive third. Harper was forced to make to make just one save in the second stanza at the 75:07 mark as the Zips defense wreaked havoc on the Miami offense.
UA closes out its three-game homestand at FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m., as the Zips host the Ohio Bobcats to kick off week three of MAC play. The weekend wraps up with a rivalry match as Akron travels to cross-town rival Kent State for a rendition of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.
