AKRON, Ohio – Akron rifle continues to dominate in the range, upsetting Navy, 4669 – 4654, on Saturday morning at Robert A. Pinn shooting range.
'What a great day for Akron. Last week at VMI showed us we needed to ratchet up our smallbore. This lead to a good week of training which bolstered confidence. This was needed as Navy had been posting scores higher than any of ours this season. Navy arrived and shot their average but our dedicated Akron athletes dug in and did what needed to be done. Being a two-relay match, at the end of relay 1, Navy was ahead by one slim point. But then Akron turned on the afterburners and lit up the ranges leaving Navy wondering what just happened" said head coach Newt Engle.
"And enough can't be said about senior Kera Kaufman. Top gun in smallbore, top gun in air rifle and author of four new school records. I'd say that is a pretty darn good day at the range. And the amazing thing is the night before the match, Kera took a serious fall at home. But she never hesitated to be at the match and motivate her team to this long awaited victory".Â
En route to upsetting Navy, Akron also broke several records. Akron's team averages score of 4669 is a new range record, breaking the old record of 4667. The Zips also broke their record in smallbore, shooting a 2332, breaking their previous record of 2316.
Â
Senior Kera Kaufman (Delmont, S.D.) had an excellent day individually, shooting a 587 in smallbore before finishing with an 1180 2-gun average, breaking the previous record (1178).

Â
Junior Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) and Gross also finished in the top five in smallbore, shooting a 580 and 578, respectively.
