KENT, Ohio– In a rendition of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge, Kent State picked up a whole point in the competition as the Akron women's soccer team fell to the Golden Flashes, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Dix Stadium.
"Today was a physical rivalry game," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "For large portions of the game, we dominated possession. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal early and allowed a second off a free kick."
As Akron was able to possess the ball well in the match, the Zips turned in 12 shot attempts with four coming on goal. Freshman Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland) was a threat in the Zips offensive third as the forward recorded a career-high seven shots in the contest. Senior Ashely Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied a pair of shots on goal while junior Abigail Brown (Batavia, Ohio), sophomore Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Pa.), and freshman Bailee Bowers (Dublin, Ohio) all registered a shot.
In the net, freshman keeper Libby Harper made six saves for the Zips.
Kent State got out in front early on in the contest as the Golden Flashes scored at the 2:41 mark of the match.
Akron quickly attempted to work its way back into the contest firing off four straight shots in a span of 13 minutes by Meaney, Bowers, and Amato, two of which were on goal but pulled in for a save.
In the first 20 minutes of the second half, the Zips registered six shots, two shots on a goal, and one corner kick continuing to try and tie the game back at 1-1.
However, the Golden Flashes successfully found the back of the net for a second time in the match in the 68' to increase its lead to 2-0 and walk away with the victory.
After a trip to Kent State on Oct. 13, the Akron women's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of FirstEnergy Stadium for week four of the 2019 Mid-American Conference season. The Zips take on Western Michigan on Friday, Oct., 18, at 7 p.m., before squaring off against Northern Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m.
