LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Akron track and field senior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) ran a school-record time of 9:28.39 to capture the women's 3,000 meters with the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA this season to spark the efforts of the Zips on the final day of the Jim Green Invitational hosted by Kentucky on Saturday, Jan. 12.
Akron finished the day posting four individual victories as part of 14 overall top-five and 26 top-10 performances.
"It was a good opener this weekend against some very good competition," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "The Zips were to the most part well represented as we had some great performances and some that we need to improve significantly. The most impressive effort was Mackenzie Andrews' school record in the 3,000 meters. Lucy (Bryan), Matt (Ludwig) and Jordan (Latimer) each won their events as well and performed marks that in the past have qualified for the NCAA Championships."
The Zips garnered first-, second- and fourth-place performances in the men's long jump with seniors Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) and Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) along with redshirt sophomore Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) recording marks of 25-7.25 (7.80m), 24-10.50 (7.58m) and 24-2.50 (7.38m), respectively. Latimer's mark is the fifth-best in the NCAA this season.
The Zips dominated the women's pole vault as junior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England), senior Eboni Hall (Pickerington, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) finished 1-2-3 eclipsing 14-1.25 (4.30m), 13-9.25 (4.20m) and 13-3.50 (4.05m), respectively. Additionally, sophomore Jenna Frantz (Versailles, Ohio) bested 12-3.50 (3.75m) to place eighth. Bryan's mark is the sixth-best in the NCAA this season.
Senior Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio) captured the men's pole vault with a winning clearance of 18-1.25 (5.52m), while fellow senior Cole Wigal (Belpre, Ohio) finished fourth with a mark of 17-2.75 (5.25m). The duo's efforts ranks third and 13th in the NCAA on the campaign.
Making her Akron debut, redshirt junior Maike Anstett soared 39-11.25 (12.17m) in the women's triple jump, to garner the fifth-best mark in indoor program history finishing fourth. Placing eighth in the event with a mark of 38-6.25 (11.74m) was freshman Zoi Balamouti (Heraklion, Greece).
In the men's 3,000 meters, redshirt sophomore Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) crossed the line in 8:19.20 and 8:33.64 to place third and 10th, respectively.
Junior Marcques Gibbs (Darby, Pa.) and Eldesouky placed third and fourth in the men's triple jump posting marks of 48-10 (14.88m) and 48-8.75 (14.85m).
The women's 4x400 relay team of freshman Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), juniors Victoria Stachowski (Waterford, Mich.) and Iman Batiste (Dublin, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Summer Ellis (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) turned in a fifth-place performance with a time of 3:56.25.
Senior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio) crossed the line in 8.65 to place seventh in the women's 60-meter hurdles, while sophomore Leah Recker (Findlay, Ohio) finished seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.98. Additionally, junior Alyssa Thomas (Uniontown, Ohio) recorded a seventh-place effort in the 3,000 meters crossing the line in 9:53.59.
Registering eighth- and ninth-place performances in the women's long jump and shot put was freshman Kassandra Roemer (Kaiserlautern, Germany) and senior Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio), collecting marks of 18-7 (5.66m) and 48-10.75 (14.90m), respectively.
Freshmen Malcom Briley (Pickerington, Ohio) and Zach Robinson (Pickerington, Ohio) notched seventh- and eighth-place efforts in the men's 60 meters (7.05) and 400 meters (48.96), respectively, while the men's 4x400 relay squad of Robinson, freshmen Sam Janson (Dayton, Ohio) and Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Andrew Wahl (Northfield, Ohio) finished 10th with a time of 3:24.36.
Akron returns to competition next weekend as the Zips' pole vaulters travel to Reno, Nev., to participate in the Pole Vault Summit.
