Flores & Steer Finish Play at Detroit Mercy Invite

DETROIT – Akron senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) and freshman Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio) concluded tennis play at the Detroit Mercy Invite on Saturday.

On Saturday, Flores picked up a 6-3, 6-2, win over Case Western's Mira Amin at No. 3 singles. At No. 4, Steer battled Nidhi Jha but lost, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.

At No. 2 doubles, the Akron duo lost to Bowling Green's Polina Radeva and Laura Silveira, 6-4.

"Tough weekend of matches for Carla and Lexi, having to play #2 doubles and #3 and #4 singles in this particular format," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Overall, they played pretty well, and they both got better as the matches progressed. Lexi put herself in position to win two of her three singles matches but fell just short, and in doubles, all three matches were extremely close, but the level of doubles play got better and better with each match, which was great to see."

In Friday's action, the duo opened play with a 7-5 loss for Case Western's Mira Amin and Sneha Karman at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Flores fell to Oakland's Samantha Galloway, 7-5, 6-2, and Bowling Green's Marharita-Sophia Tavpash, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 3 position.

At No. 4 singles, Steer fought Oakland's Alexandra Whall but fell 6-3, 3-6, 10-0. She lost in straight set to Bowling Green's Ayumi Saski, 6-2, 6-2.

Akron travels to the Cleveland State Invitational on Oct. 5-7.
