AKRON, Ohio– The University of Akron women's soccer team returned home to FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field where the Zips battled Indiana State back-and-forth in an action packed 110 minutes of play before resulting in a 2-2 draw on Friday night.Â
Â
Akron now stands 1-2-1 after four contests early in the 2018 season, while Indiana State moves to 1-2-2.Â
Â
The Zips offense was led by a flurry of players as junior Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.), redshirt freshman Charley Kale (Sylvania, Ohio), along with freshmen Hailey Clere (Oregon, Ohio) and Sydney Worthy (Groveport, Ohio) combined to tally eight of the 15 Akron shots in the contest. Amato paced the Zips with four shots and two on goal, one of which resulted in her second goal of the season.Â
Â
Freshman Erin McKinney (Belvidere, Ill.) made her third start of the season for Akron in net and corralled two saves, both of which came in clutch situation during the overtime periods.Â
Â
Indiana State started the eventual action-packed contest going and got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead in the 11'.Â
Â
Akron made some noise of their own and knotted up the game at one goal apiece. The Zips stole possession of the ball at midfield and quickly headed downfield into their offensive third. Freshman Kayleigh Penton (Vermilion, Ohio) possessed the ball just outside of the box on the right side of the field and fired a cross into the middle of the box where her teammate Amato was standing. In a battle with a defender, Amato headed the ball toward the net that hit the crossbar, was directed down and landed over the goal line for the score. Penton earned her first career assist with the Zips on the play.
Â
The contest between the Zips and Sycamores would remain deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the halftime break. Akron would take the offensive advantage into the locker room with them after outshooting Indiana State, 6-2, and was in front in the corner kick category, 2-1.Â
Â
Clere had a moment to remember in the second half just three minutes into the second stanza of play. Clere found herself at the top of the box in the Akron offensive third with the ball at her feet following a Sycamore turnover. The midfielder turned and struck the ball on goal that hit the Sycamores keeper, went right through the wickets, and into the back of the net for Clere's first career goal in an Akron uniform.Â
Â
The Zips would hold the lead for the next six minutes in the contest before Indiana State tied the game up at 2-2 courtesy of a header goal played in off a corner kick.Â
Â
Akron again would outshoot the Sycamores in the second period of play, 8-5. However, the lone shot on goal in the half was turned away by the ISU keeper and the game headed to overtime following 90 minutes of play.
Â
Now down a player due to a double yellow card, the Akron defense picked up the intensity in the two overtime periods not allowing Indiana State to score and end the contest.Â
Â
Worthy took the lone shot in the second overtime period of play from the left side of the box, but it was blocked by Sycamore defender and cleared out of harm's way.Â
Â
At the end of the 110 minutes, the contest ended in a 2-2 draw between Akron and Indiana State.Â
Â
Akron is back in action on the pitch this Sunday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. The Zips take on the visiting Youngstown State Penguins at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field. The contest on Sunday is Akron's Go 4 The Goal match.Â
