AKRON, Ohio— For the third consecutive year, University of Akron senior Kyle Foster (Parkersburg, W.Va.) has been named a preseason candidate for the 2018 Peter Mortell Holder of the Year Award, the HOTY Foundation announced via social media.
Foster, who has played in every game of his collegiate career as the holder, was a semifinalist for the award in 2016 and 2017.
In 2017, Foster held for PK Tom O'Leary, who converted three field goals and went 26-of-27 in 39-of-42 extra points, and for PK Nick Gasser, who made three field goals and went 13-of-14 in extra points. Foster has never missed or fumbled a snap. In 2015, he assisted PK Robert Stein who finished his career as the Zips' all-time scoring leader.
An Academic All-MAC honoree, Foster earned a bachelor's degree in sport management in May 2018. He is pursuing a master's degree.
The Mortell Holder of the Year Award is presented annually to the nation's top field goal holder. The committee will select the winner using several main criteria, including quality of cadence, fluidity of hands (catch to hold), position of laces, and post-hold celebrations.
A former Minnesota holder and undrafted Green Bay Packer punter, Mortell created the award in 2015 to promote the importance of his position nationally. He was the inaugural recipient of the award at the 2015 ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. Michigan's Garrett Moores was the 2016 recipient, while Oklahoma's Connor McGinnis was the 2017 recipient. For more information, visit: www.hotyfoundation.com.
Under the guidance of seventh-year head coach Terry Bowden, Akron returns 58 letterwinners, including 15 starters, to its spread offense and 4-3 defense. Akron opens the 2018 season at Nebraska on Saturday, Sept. 1. The game will kick off on FOX at 8 p.m. ET. The Zips host Morgan State in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
Season ticket plans—which include a ticket to all home games and the "I Love the 90's" concert as well as a parking pass— start at only $60 each. As a season ticket holder, fans have the ability to purchase tickets for road games at Nebraska, Northwestern, and Iowa State.
