Men’s Golf Prepares for 2018 Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate

Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team is preparing for the 2018 Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday, April 7-8, at The Club at Irish Creek co-hosted by Davidson and Charlotte in Kannapolis, N.C.
"We look forward to playing the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate every year," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "The competition is very good, and this year is no different with several teams ranked inside the Top 35 in the nation. We performed better in our previous tournament and look to continue to see improvements this weekend."
The two-day 54-hole event will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Saturday morning on the Par 71, 7,099-yard layout with 36 holes to be played on the opening day. Sunday's final round will also tee off at 8:30 a.m. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
The 15-team field features four teams that are ranked in the Top 35 and six players inside the Top 100. The team lineup is highlighted by No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 15 Clemson, No. 29 North Florida, and No. 35 Kansas. The field also includes co-hosts Davidson and Charlotte along with Akron, Dartmouth, Dayton, Indiana, James Madison, Middle Tennessee State, UNCG, West Virginia and VCU.
The Zips starting lineup includes junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), senior George Baylis (Ascot, England), junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), and freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden). In addition, junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.) joins the 88-player field as an individual.
Akron is slated to open the shotgun start round at 8:30 a.m. on holes No. 13 through 17. Grayson starts on hole No. 13 followed by Baylis on 14, Appleby on 15, McFarland and Sunden on 16, and Morgan on 17.
Last year, the Zips finished 13th overall in team scoring after posting an 886 (+34) 54-hole total. Akron recorded rounds of 291 (+7), 292 (+8), and 303 (+19) at The Club at Irish Creek
Appleby led Akron's scoring efforts with 218 (+5) tournament total, finishing 42nd overall with rounds of 71 (E), 74 (+3), and 73 (+2). Grayson and Baylis added 223 (+10) and 229 (+16) scores.
