ATHENS, Ohio -- Akron and Ohio University began a three-game series this afternoon in Athens, Ohio in a MAC East showdown, but the Bobcats had the Zips number taking a pair of contests from Akron, 8-0 and 5-2, on day one of the series at Ohio Softball Field.Â
Game one belonged to the Bobcats as they shutout Akron 8-0 in to start off the afternoon. Ohio scored three runs in the first inning and at least one run in four of the next five innings en route to a win in six innings.Â
The Akron offense was limited to just three hits in the contest by the Bobcats starter, Danielle Steine. Senior Cassie Gillespie (Sylvania, Ohio), junior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio), and sophomore Madison Carter (Newnan, Ga.) each tallied a hit in the contest. With her single in the first inning, Gillespie extender her hit streak to nine games.Â
Freshman Kayla Kmett (San Clemente, Calif.) made her 15th start in the circle for Akron and tossed 3.1 innings. The Zips righty allowed five hits and recorded six groundouts and three flyouts. Senior Kooper Vertz (Dilsboro, Ind.) entered the contest out of the bullpen in relief of Kmett and hurled two innings, gave up three hits, four fly outs, and two groundouts.Â
In game two, Akron managed to get on the board first against the Bobcats in the third inning, but five unanswered runs by Ohio earned them a 5-2 win in part two of the twinbill.
Akron broke a scoreless tie between the Zips and Bobcats in the top of the third inning courtesy of a two-run jack by Gillespie which scored redshirt freshman Sydney Jasoce (Commerce, Mich.) who hit a two-out single just before Gillespie stepped to the plate. Gillespie hit her first home run of the season and second of her career.Â
From that point on it was all Bobcats scoring at least one run in their half of the last four innings, which was highlighted by a two-run inning in the fourth.Â
Jascoe posted her tenth multi-hit performance of the season going 2-for-3 in the contest, Gillespie increased her hit streak to ten consecutive games, and junior Maddy Clowdus (Eastvale, Calif.) tallied Akron's fourth hit of the ball game.Â
Kmett made back-to-back starts in the twinbill. In game two, Kmett tossed her fourth complete game of the season by way of 6.0 innings pitched, 10 hits, five runs, three strikeouts and one walk.Â
Akron and Ohio meet on Saturday, April 14 for one final contest of the weekend to close out the three-game series. First pitch between the Zips and Bobcats is scheduled for Noon.Â
