CLEVELAND – The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed a 4-3 win at Cleveland State at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on Tuesday afternoon.
The Zips (10-6 overall) captured the doubles point over the Vikings (4-8 overall). At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) defeated Isabella Spindler and Aleksandra Golawska, 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) beat Jana Schober and Blanche Lenoan, 6-3. Play at No. 3 stopped once the doubles point was secured.
"Difficult match today, but I'm very happy with how we played in doubles, and then getting the match to 4-1," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "We played hard in all three of our singles losses, losing many deuce point games that made the difference in those particular matches. All in all, it feels good to get a win inside their building. They play great at home, so any time we can come here and pick up a team win, is a good day for Akron Tennis."
In singles action, the Zips captured wins at the No. 2, 5, and 6 positions for the victory.
At No. 2 singles, Vasilescu (11-2 overall) won her third consecutive match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Gaby Schoenberg.
At No. 5 singles, Echeverry (9-5 overall) defeated Anastasia Perin in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
At No. 6 singles, freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) battled Blanche Lenoan to a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win.
Akron has a nine-day break before hosting Youngstown State and LaSalle on Thursday, March 15 at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
