Women’s Tennis Splits Matches with Youngstown State, La Salle

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team split its final two non-conference matches on Thursday afternoon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
The Zips (10-7 overall) fell to Youngstown State (6-9 overall), 4-3, before sweeping against La Salle (2-7 overall), 7-0.
"Difficult lost today," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "We know that we have to play better in conference, and we know that we can play better. YSU is a strong team, and they were more determined than we were today and played the bigger points better."
In the first match, the Penguins claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) defeated Sofia Macias and Tamara Teufl, 6-3.
UA won three singles matches. At No. 1, Pedroso battled Noelly Longi Nsimba for a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) (12-2 overall) won her fourth consecutive match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sofia Macias.
At No. 5 singles, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) (10-5 overall) defeated Tamara Teufl in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
In the second match, Akron and La Salle participated in singles play first. The Zips won each match in straight sets.
At No. 1, Pedroso defeated Tiffany Theophil, 6-2, 6-0. At No. 2, senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) beat out Ali Snyder, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3, Echeverry took care of Brittany Poje, 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 4, freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jade Smith. At No. 5, senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) defeated Maansi Malhotra, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 6, junior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) shut out Jayla Smith, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action against the Explorers, Pedroso and Uljanov picked up their second win on the day with a 6-2 victory over Snyder and Theophil at No. 1. At No. 2, Knezevich and Wolfe defeated Poje and Jade Smith, 6-3. At No. 3, Echeverry and Wituski beat Malhotra and Jayla Smith, 6-1.
Akron opens Mid-American Conference play on Friday, March 23, at Eastern Michigan in a 1 p.m. match.
