YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a nail-biter in the Mid-American Conference opener with a 4-3 loss at Eastern Michigan on Friday afternoon at the Wasik Tennis Complex.

"This was an extremely difficult match to let slip away," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "Our freshmen had to deal with some unfortunate circumstances. Collectively, however, we need every player to step up in important situations. The good news is that we get to step right back on court on Sunday against a strong Toledo team, so we need to have a short memory and move on quickly."

The Zips (11-7 overall, 0-1 MAC) claimed the doubles point against the Eagles (11-3, 1-0 MAC). At No. 2 doubles, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Andrea Martinovska and Anna Veleva, 6-4.

At No. 3 doubles, senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) took care of Giulianna Ansaloni and Natalia Regalado, 6-2.

In singles action, Vasilescu (13-2 overall) won her fifth consecutive match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Marie Mayerova at No. 2.

At No. 4 singles, Echeverry battled Martinovska for a 6-0, 6-7 (6), 6-3 win.

Akron returns home on Sunday, March 25, for a 1 p.m. MAC match with Toledo at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
