Women’s Tennis Opens MAC Play with Eastern Michigan & Toledo

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team opens 2018 Mid-American Conference play at Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 23.
The Zips (11-7 overall, 0-0 MAC) and host Eagles (9-3 overall, 0-0 MAC), who are riding a seven-match win streak, will meet at the Wasik Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
On Sunday, March 25, Akron hosts Toledo (10-3 overall, 0-0 MAC) at 1 p.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
"We have worked extremely hard all spring to prepare for MAC play," head coach Brandon Padgett. "I am confident that this team is ready. Our goals are clear, and we know how much work is still ahead of us. I'm looking forward to seeing who steps up for us."
In the preseason MAC coaches' poll, Buffalo was selected to win the 2018 MAC crown. Akron was picked fifth along with Bowling Green, followed by Toledo (7th), and Eastern Michigan (9th).
In all-time series, EMU leads Akron, 23-8. The Rockets hold a 31-12 edge over the Zips.
In its only action last week, UA split two matches on March 15; falling to Youngstown State, 4-3, and sweeping La Salle, 7-0.
Freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) is 12-2 in singles action this spring, moving up from No. 6 to No. 1-2 after starting out her collegiate career at a perfect 8-0. Junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) stands 11-5 in singles action, seeing action at the No. 2-5 positions. Junior Carla Flores (Caohuila, Mexico) is 5-0 at No. 6 singles this spring.
Riding a seven-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles, sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) are 7-1 at the position this spring. At No. 3 doubles, senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) are 4-0 in spring action.
