Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips women's golf team looks to continue their solid play at the Colonel Classic hosted by Eastern Kentucky on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31 at the University Club at Arlington in Richmond, Ky.
"We are excited to get back on the course this weekend against a very good field on a fun golf course," Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "This golf course provides many challenges, but if you are patient you can find many opportunities to score low. We will need to be very patient not only with the course but the impending weather."
The University Club in Arlington is a par-72 course the stretches 5,815 yards. Zips enter the 54-hole event after winning the Kingsmill Invitational and posting back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Bradley Invite and Rio Verde Invitational.
Akron will use the same lineup as their last three outings, consisting of junior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio), freshman Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio), freshman Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio), senior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.), and sophomore Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.). In addition, junior Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) and senior Mallory Etcheberry (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) will join the Zips playing as individuals.
The Eastern Kentucky hosts the 15-team field tournament that includes four teams from the Mid-American Conference in Akron, Ball State, Ohio, and Toledo, as well as, Austin Peay, Belmont, Dayton, Louisiana-Monroe, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, and Xavier.
The Colonel Classic is scheduled for two 18-hole rounds of golf on Friday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. ET. Saturday's final round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET with tee times from holes No. 1 and 10. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
During the Spring schedule, Nicholson and Pikunas have led the Zips' scoring efforts as each player posted first place and runner-up performances. Nicholson earned medalist honors at Rio Verde and runner-up at the Kingsmill Invitational. Pikunas finished runner-up at Rio Verde and tied for first in scoring at the Bradley Invite, but earned second after a three-hole playoff.
Pikunas currently leads the Zips with the lowest stroke average, 73.55, en route to seven Top 25 finishes, while Nicholson follows with five Top 25 appearances and a 75.05 stroke average.
