Nicholson Earns Second MAC Golfer of the Week Award in March

Cleveland, Ohio – Akron Zips junior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) earned her second Mid-American Conference Women's Golfer of the Week award for the month of March after placing second at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate, the league announced Thursday.

"Danielle's final round 73 at Kingsmill in extremely tough conditions truly earned her this recognition," Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "She displayed great mental toughness and resiliency to shoot a low number and make a strong comeback."

Nicholson earned runner-up honors at the par-72, 6,025-yard River Course at Kingsmill Resort on Tuesday, March 21. The Zips finished the 54-hole event with a 311 (+23) final round to go along with the previous 302 (+14) and 298 (+10) scores. Akron placed four golfers in the Top 20 while all five Zips ranked in the Top 40.

Nicholson led the way for the Zips, climbing six spots to finish runner-up. She opened the final round tied for eighth overall with a 75-74 – 149 (+5) two-round total, and fired a field-low 1-over par 73 final round performance.

Nicholson completed the event with a second-best 36 pars and a fourth-best six birdies. In addition, she finished in the Top 4 in scoring on the par 3, 4, and 5 holes. Nicholson averaged 4.13 strokes on all par-4's during the event for a 4-over total, ranking second overall. She followed by ranking third in par-5 scoring with 4.92 strokes (-1) and fourth on the par-3's at 3.25 strokes (+3).

On Thursday, March 1, Nicholson was tabbed MAC Golfer of the Week for successfully defending her tournament title at the Rio Verde Invitational.

For the second straight year, Nicholson won the Rio Verde Invitational while leading the Akron women's golf team to a second place finish at the 6,128-yard, par-72 Quail Run Course.

Nicholson earned medalist honors after climbing 15 spots to top the leaderboard. She opened the 54-hole tournament with a 76 ( 4) and 15th overall after 18 holes.

The following round she bounced back and fired a 4-under par 68 score, moving into the lead after 36 holes of play with an even scorecard of 144 strokes.

She secured the win with a 2-under final round 70 en route to a 214 (-2) tournament total, one-stroke better than last year's run at the title. Nicholson finished six-strokes better than the field as teammate freshman Jacinta Pikunas earned runner-up honors.

For the tournament, Nicholson carded 37 pars, 10 birdies, six bogeys, and a double bogey. During the second round, she recorded 11 pars, five birdies, and a bogey.

The Zips will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31 at Arlington Country Club in Richmond, Ky. for the Colonel Classic.
