MARTIN, Tenn. -- A pair of shutouts for UT Martin (5-0) and Northern Kentucky (8-0) against the Akron softball team dropped the Zips on day one of the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic on Saturday morning at the Bettye Giles Softball Field in Martin, Tenn.Â
After falling to the Skyhawks and Norse, Akron is now 1-18-1 in 2018 while UT Martin stands at 12-14 and NKU owns an 11-6 ledger.Â
On the afternoon, the Zips recorded nine hits combined against the Skyhawks and the Norse to total the offensive production. Senior Cassie Gillespie (Sylvania, Ohio), junior Maddy Clowdus (Eastvale, Calif.) and redshirt junior Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.) each tallied two hits on the afternoon.Â
Northern Kentucky struck for five runs in the first inning against Akron to open the weekend of competition and added three insurance runs later in the bottom of the sixth inning.Â
The Zips left four runners on base against the Norse and had one runner in scoring position but could not manage to bring them around to score.Â
Against host UT Martin, the Skyhawks did their damage early in the contest scoring all five runs in the first two innings of the ballgame which would end up as the final score, 5-0.Â
Again, Akron tallied five hits in the contest and left six runners on base with three Zips in scoring position.Â
All three members of the Akron pitching staff made an appearance in at least one game on day one of the tournament. Freshman Mikayla Newland (Chillicothe, Ohio) made the start against the Norse, freshman Kayla Kmett (San Clemente, Calif.) started in the circle against the Skyhawks, and senior Kooper Vertz (Dilsboro, Ind.) made two relief appearances out of the pen. The staff struggled in both games on the day giving up a combined eight earned runs on 16 hits while striking out four.Â
The Zips return to action on Sunday, March. 18, as Akron takes on Northern Kentucky and UT Martin in round two of the weekend starting at 10:30 a.m.
