Zips Finish Eighth at 2018 Great America Rifle Conference Championships

 MORGANTOWN, W.Va.-  The No. 16 Akron Zips rifle concluded the 2018 season with an eighth-place finish at the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships on Saturday at the WVU Rifle range at the West Virginia University Campus.

Defending national champion West Virginia claimed its ninth consecutive (and 13th overall) conference team title with a 4,699-combined score. Kentucky (4,686) followed, with Navy (4, 663) taking third. Akron had a combined score of 4,637.

In the air rifle competition, the Wildcats shot a 2,367 for first place. WVU (2,366) followed by one-point, and Navy was third (2,348). The Zips finished sixth after firing a 2,345.

Defending national champion Ginny Thrasher of West Virginia captured the individual air rifle title with a 595. Kentucky's Hailee Sigmon was second (594), and WVU's Sarah Osborn (593) was third.

Junior Caleb Lloyd (Seven Valleys, Pa.) led the Zips' air rifle shooting with a career-best 591 mark. Sophomores Lauryn Cinadr (Brunswick, Ohio) and Kera Kaufman (Delmont, SD) and, junior Rebecca Green (Coventry, RI.) all posted an air rifle score of 588.

The Zips finished seventh in the smallbore portion of the event with Lloyd and freshman Wyatt Openshaw (Parkon, MD.) leading the Zips again with a 575-shooting score. Close in tow was sophomore Cierra Terrizzi (Dallastown, Pa.) who shot a 575.

The 2018 NCAA Championships will be held March 9-10, at The Citadel's McAlister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina. The field includes eight teams- Air Force, Alaska Fairbanks, Kentucky, Murray State, Nebraska, Ohio State, TCU, and defending champion West Virginia- as well as individuals from Army, Memphis, Navy, NC State, Ole Miss, and UT Martin.Â
