Akron used back-to-back turnovers to ignite a 12-2 run headlined by an Utomi layup and a second 3-pointer by Duvivier. Akron held the home squad scoreless for three minutes as the built a 15-2 advantage with 16:01 showing on the clock.
The Golden Flashes answered with a 10-point scoring run of their own that was paced by Jaylin Walker who accounted for six points off of back-to-back three-pointers. Duvivier ended the run with a pair of free throws to keep Akron in front 17-14.
With under eight minutes left to play in the first half, Utomi hit a shot from beyond the arc that added on to Akron's lead, 22-16. The Golden Flashes capitalized on an Eric Parrish (Cypress, Texas) turnover that set them up for another Walker three that put Kent State within one of the Zip's 22-21 advantage.

After a few minutes of back-and-forth action with the Zips holding a 28-25 lead, Kent State's Walker hit his fourth 3-pointer of the half to deadlock the game, 28-28. Duvivier pushed the Zips back into the driver's seat with a triple, 31-28, but 4-0 run gave the Golden Flashes a one-point advantage at the break.

Kent State continued its striking from beyond the arc as the Golden Flashes used a 9-0 run consisting of all long-distance buckets that put Kent State ahead, 47-39.

He followed with four consecutive free throws for a 74-67 advantage. The Zips' final efforts to steal the lead weren't enough to push past the Golden Flashes' offense that capitalized their last 11 possessions. KSU finished the game with a 78-68 victory.
