Geier/Uljanov Claim Doubles Final at MAC Fall Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Akron women's tennis team advanced to five tourney final matches, claiming two titles, at the MAC Fall Tournament at the Evert Academy on Sunday.

The tourney, which featured Mid-American Conference rivals Akron, Buffalo, Northern Illinois, and Toledo, as well as local teams Florida Atlantic and ASA Miami, concluded action on Sunday after three long days of play which included weather delays.

In doubles action, redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) defeated Toledo's Kokoro Chishaki and Thalita Rodrigues, 7-5, to capture the Flight B doubles title.

"I was impressed with the overall level of play this past weekend, especially with the tournament being played on clay, and the team not having the opportunity to practice on clay prior to playing the tournament," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Anna and Sophia played exceptional doubles in their first competition competing as a team, which helps us with the formation of possible doubles teams for the spring season."

In singles action, No. 1 seed Geier fell to FAU's Natalia Boltinskaya, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8), in the title match for Flight A, while Uljanov dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) battle to ASA Miami's Michaela Krausova in the Flight C title match.

In the Flight D title match, No. 1 seed freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) beat NIU's Maria Potsi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

"Ceci played great singles all weekend long, and wasn't really challenged. Clay is her favorite surface, but this shows us that with a little extra work, we should see similar results from her on hard courts."

In the Flight E final, No. 2 seed freshman Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio) lost to Buffalo's Gabriella Klvovich, 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Akron opens spring play on Friday, January 18, with Oakland at 10 a.m. and Chicago State at 4 p.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
