Akron, Ohio – After winning the first-ever Firestone Invitational championship and first win of the season, the Akron Zips men's golf team enters the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 8-9, at the Pete Dye Golf Course in Bridgeport, W.Va.
This is a great event - one we look forward to playing every year, and the course is a great test," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "We had a good couple of days of preparation, and we are anxious to get back to competition."
The Zips will use the same lineup that secured the title at Firestone Country Club with senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden), junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain), redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio). In addition, redshirt freshman Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio) will participate as an individual.
The 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Pete Dye Golf Club. The course is ranked No. 45 on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Courses, and No. 9 on Golfweek's Best Modern Courses. The par 72 course stretches 7,353 yards across 250 acres rolling through the Appalachian Mountains with a slope of 144 and a handicap rating of 75.7.
The 14-team field includes host West Virginia, Akron, Boston College, Bowling Green, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, Georgetown, James Madison, Marshall, Ohio, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John's and Winthrop.
The Mountaineer Intercollegiate will follow a typical 54-hole format with 36 holes of continuous play on Monday and an 18-hole final round on Tuesday. Opening round action is slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start as the Zips take the course on holes 4-6. Final round tee times will be set at the end of 36-holes of play, and the field is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
