Muncie, Ind. – Junior guard Jimond Ivey (Cleveland, Ohio) forced double overtime with a 3-pointer from the wing and scored 48 points in Akron's 111-106 double-overtime loss to Ball State at Worthen Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Ivey's 48 points broke Akron's all-time single-game scoring record of 47 points set by Joe Jakubick on Feb. 05, 1983 against Murray State.
Â
Ivey was magnificent on both ends of the floor, shooting 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the field that included a 75 percent effort (9-of-12) from downtown. Ivey scored 34 points in regulation and registered seven points in each of the 5-minute overtime periods. He was 9-of-10 from the charity stripe and added eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a blocked shot in 49 minutes of work.
Â
Ivey's career-high performance broke the Worthen Arena's all-time scoring mark of 41 points previously held by Bonzi Wells (Ball State, 1996) and Earl Boykins (Eastern Michigan, 1998). Ivey's nine 3-pointers set an arena record and he tied the arena record for made field goals (15) set in 1992 by Xavier's Brian Grant.
Â
In addition, the 217 combined points are the most in Worthen Arena history, while Akron's 106 points are the most ever by a visiting team and the most ever by the losing team in that arena.
Â
After battling to an 81-81 stalemate by the end of regulation, Ball State (13-8, 4-4 MAC) looked to be in the driver's seat in the first overtime session as Kyle Mallers buried two free throws to put the Cardinals ahead by three points with 3.4 seconds remaining in the game.
Â
Ivey collected the inbounds pass and flew up the court to launch a 3-pointer from the deep right wing position. He got the shot off as time expired, and after the buzzer sounded the game was tied, 95-95. Ivey scored half of the Zips' 14 points in the first extra frame and continued to find the bottom of the net in the second overtime.
Â
In the final frame, Ball State claimed their second-largest lead of the game, 107-101, with 1:16 left to play as Tahjai Teague sent the crowd into a frenzy with a dunk.
Â
Ivey immediately cut the lead in half with one of his nine triples and followed with a layup to put Akron (10-10, 3-5 MAC) within one point with 26 seconds remaining, 107-106.
Â
The Cardinals responded with a layin, 109-106, and with four seconds left to play, Trey Moses deflected the inbounds pass off Ivey to give the ball back to the Cardinals. Moses collected the final bucket of the game to finish with 22 points.
Â
Akron shot 46.8 percent (36-of-77) from the field and 34.1 percent (15-of-44) from deep as graduate senior Malcolm Duvivier (Toronto, Ontario) added 22 points. Duvivier was whistled for his fifth foul with 10 seconds remaining in regulation after connecting with 8-of-18 shots from the floor, 3-of-9 from long distance, and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. He added five assists, two rebounds, and two steals.
Â
Freshman Virshon Cotton (Milwaukke, Wisc.) and sophomore Daniel Utomi (Houston, Texas) rounded out the double digit scoring with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Â
Teague and Tayler Persons led Ball State with 26 points apiece, while Mallers and Sean Sellers collected 18 and 10 points respectively.
Â
The Cardinals shot 50 percent (34-of-68) from the floor and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from deep with a 78.6 percent (33-of-42) effort from the free throw line. The Cardinals double Akron's free throw attempts as the Zips cashed in with 90.5 percent (19-of-21). Ball State held a slight 42-40 edge on the glass, and the turnover battle was deadlocked at 18 apiece.
Â
In a game that featured 17 tied scores and 12 lead changes, the Cardinals started the scoring and carried a 9-5 lead into the first media break. Ball State continued its run, using seven unanswered points to establish its largest lead of the game at eight points, 13-5, with 12:22 showing on the clock in the first half.
Â
Akron immediately responded with a run of its own as freshman Eric Parrish (Cypress, Texas) buried two free throws that started a 10-0 scoring outburst. Ivey drained a pair of 3-pointers, and Akron established its first lead at 8:45 in the first half, 15-13.
Â
Ball State committed seven turnovers during that stretch, and after a timeout, Akron extended run to 13 points with a Cotton free throw and Utomi layin.
Â
Three straight free throws by the Cardinals halted Akron's run, and Ball State regained a brief 21-20 lead, but Duvivier and Ivey combined for four points to push the Zips back in front, 24-21.
Â
Ball State knotted the game at 24 apiece with 3:41 left to play and Akron again built a 3-point advantage and held on until intermission, 32-29.
Â
The Cardinals opened the second frame with six unanswered points for a 35-32 advantage by the 17:22 mark. Teague scored the first half dozen points and added a layup to push the lead to 37-32.
Â
Utomi answered with a triple and old-fashioned 3-point play to cut the deficit to one point, and after another Teague layin, Ivey connected from deep for the game's fifth stalemate at 41 apiece. Akron didn't stop there as the Zips used a 7-0 run fueled by an Ivey dunk to take a 54-48 lead at the midpoint.
Â
Akron continued to score the ball, increasing the lead to as many as eight points with 6:58 remaining, 63-55, but behind 10-0 run Ball State was in the lead again, 65-63.
Ivey stopped the run with a layup and added back-to-back 3-pointers to keep Zips in the game and tying it for the 10th time at 73-73. Ball State added five unanswered points, including an old-fashioned 3-point play for Persons.
Â
Duvivier answered with a floater in the lane and a conventional 3-point play for a 79-78 BSU advantage with 59 seconds on the clock.
Â
A missed shot by Cardinals led to Zips bleeding the entire shot clock, but Ivey grabbed the rebound to keep possession going with 19.8 seconds left to play. Ivey found Utomi in the post on the inbounds, and Utomi scored the bucket while getting fouled. Utomi buried the bonus bucket for the lead, 81-79.
Â
On the ensuing possession, Persons drew a whistle against Duvivier and Ball State tied the game with two free throws, 81-81, with 10 seconds remaining in the game.
Â
The Zips final 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark, forcing overtime.
Â
Ball State scored the first three points in the extra period, but Cotton tied the game with a 3-pointer in the far corner. After another stop, Cotton drained a pair of free throws for an 86-84 Akron lead, but Ball State answered.
Â
The two teams continued to trade buckets as Akron would gain the lead and Ball State would tie the game. With less than a minute to play and tied 88-all, Akron called timeout. The Zips ran a play for Ivey, who scored his 36th point.
Â
Ball State outscored the Zips 5-2 in the closing minute until Ivey's 3-pointer extended the game.
Â
The Zips are back on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 30, playing Mid-American Conference foe Miami in Oxford, Ohio. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Millett Hall. Fans can also follow the action on ESPN3, 1350-AM or GoZips.com.
