Gauthney Named to Rimington Trophy Watch List

2017 SEASON TICKETS
NEW YORK – University of Akron senior center LaVonne Gauthney (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) has been named to the 2017 Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List, the Rimington Trophy Committee announced on Tuesday.

The preseason list contains at least one player from each conference with the Mid-American Conference leading the way with 10 candidates.

The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA Division I-A College Football. Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy has raised over $2.9 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and has raised over $130 million for the fight against cystic fibrosis.

Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-American center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.

The 2017 Rimington Trophy winner will be recognized at the trophy presentation on Jan. 13, 2018, in Lincoln, Neb.

A three-year starter, Gauthney has played on both sides of the ball for the Zips. After playing defensive line as a freshman and tight end as a sophomore, Gauthney moved to the offensive line last fall where he started 11 games at center. The recipient of the team's John Heisman Award, Gauthney is expected to earn his bachelor's degree in sport management in Summer 2017. He will compete in the fall as a graduate student.

Under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Terry Bowden, Akron returns 57 letterwinners, including 15 starters, to its spread offense and 4-3 defense. The Zips open the 2017 season at Penn State on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Noon on ABC. In the home opener, Akron hosts Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN3.

Season ticket plans—which include a ticket to all six home games as well as a parking pass—start at only $60 each. Renewals (for current season ticket holders) and new seats are now available for purchase by calling 1-888-99-AKRON (25766) or visiting The C.P. and Cornelia S. Chima Athletics Ticket Office at InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field (located at 375 E. Exchange Street, near Gate 1 at the southwest corner of the venue, at the corner of E. Exchange and S. Union streets) during business hours (Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
