Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team will battle for the 2017 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships at Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 28-30.
"The MAC Championships is an outstanding event that features great competition on a very challenging golf course," head coach David Trainor said. "We approach this event as we do all the others with hard work and preparation, and the ultimate goal is to win."
Eastern Michigan University hosts this year's championship event, which is set for four rounds (72 holes) over three days, beginning on Friday. The Zips will 36 holes on Friday, and take the course starting at 9:34 a.m. ET from the 10th tee and again at approximately 1:34 p.m. ET from the same location. The third and fourth rounds are scheduled for 8 a.m. ET starts on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Fans can follow all the action live via GolfStat Live Scoring.
Akron makes its 25th appearance at the MAC Championship, and the Zips have placed in the Top 5 nine times, including two program-best second place finishes in 2007 and 2014. Last season, Akron finished fifth overall, and junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) became the first Akron men's golfer in program history to win medalist honors at the Mid-American Conference Championship. Baylis carded a 4-under par 67 final round score en route to a 1-under par 283 stroke tournament win at the par 71, 6,712-yard Highland Meadows Golf Club. Baylis currently owns a second-best 74.81 stroke average in 11 events and 32 rounds played to date.
The 2017 MAC Championships lineup for the Zips includes sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), Baylis, senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France), senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.), and sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio).
"We have played steady all year and we are looking to put that all together this week," Trainor said. "George, Elliott, Zach, Jacob, and Yann have all played well in spurts, and all are prepared to embrace the challenge through four rounds (72 holes) of golf."
Grayson leads the squad into battle after posting a team-best 73.90 stroke average through 11 events and 32 rounds this season. He has led the Zips' scoring efforts in four events and will be making his second appearance at the MAC Championships. In his MAC Championship debut, Grayson finished 20th overall with a 300 (+16) 72-hole performance. Grayson is scheduled to tee off at 10:06 a.m.
Baylis follows as Akron's No. 2 golfer, teeing off at 9:58 a.m., while Pfeiffer starts his final MAC Championship tournament eight minutes prior. Pfeiffer's 74.82 stroke average ranks third in team scoring by a slim margin. He has played in eight events this season, consisting in 22 total rounds. Last year, Pfeiffer finished the four-round event 15th overall with a 298 (+14) tournament total.
Gollwitzer makes his second MAC Championship appearance and is fourth in team scoring with a 75.63 stroke average in nine events and 27 rounds played. As a freshman, Gollwitzer fired a 21st-best 300 (+12) 72-hole total. He is scheduled for a 9:42 a.m. tee time.
Rounding out the Zips' starting five is Appleby. He led Akron's scoring in two events this season and currently holds a 77.24 stroke average with eight events and 21 rounds under his belt. Appleby will be making his MAC Championships debut.
