Columbus, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team posted a 616 (+48) team score en route to a ninth place 36-hole performance at the 2017 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State on Saturday.Â
The Zips opened the event with a 315 (+31) and cut 14 strokes off the second round score for a 301 (+17) tally at OSU's Scarlet course, a par 71 that stretches 7,455 yards.
Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) led Akron's scoring efforts, posting a 4-over par 146 two-round effort. Grayson is tied for sixth place after carding a75 (+4) and an even-par 71 scores. Sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) followed for the Zips with a 155 (+13) tournament total on rounds of 79 (+8) and 76 (+5) for 42nd place. Â
Senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) currently ranks 56th after 158 (+16), while junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) stands at 68th with a 161 (+19). Rounding out the Zips' scoring was freshman Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) with a 166 (+24) 36-hole total.
Kent State currently leads the team scoring with a 579 (+11) score, while Illinois trails by only one stroke with a 580 (+12) tournament total. The Golden Flashes' Chase Johnson leads the individual leaderboard by a stroke (144, +2), while Illinois' Dylan Meyer and Michael Feagles along with KSU's Bjarki Petursson and Iowa's Carson Schakke are in a four-player stalemate for second place at 145 (+3).Â
Sunday's final round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., teeing off from holes No. 1 and No. 10. Akron is slated to start at 8:18 a.m. with McFarland, followed by Baylis (8:27), Gollwitzer (8:36), Appleby (8:45), and Grayson (8:54).Â
