AKRON, Ohio - Former University of Akron men's soccer standouts have found success this season as more than 25 former Zips are currently playing professional soccer both in the United States and abroad.
MLS
Saad Abdul-Salaam – Sporting KC (@Saad_Abdul)
Has battled an early season thigh injury and made his 2017 debut for Sporting KC subbing in the final minute of play in a 1-0 victory at Portland (April 15).
Teal Bunbury – New England Revolution (@TealBunB)
Has garnered reserve action for the Revolution (2-2-1) in each of the squad's first six matches of 2017…owns five shots on the campaign, including posting a season-best two in a 1-1 draw at Portland (April 2)…subbed in to play a season-high 24 minutes in a 3-0 setback at Chicago (April 15).
Evan Bush – Montreal Impact (@ebushel1)
Has played every minute of the Impact's six matches this season en route to registering 16 saves and owning a 1.50 goals against average…recorded a season-high six saves in a 2-0 setback at Los Angeles (April 7)…registered two, three and two saves, respectively, in 2-2, 1-1 and 2-2 draws against Chicago (April 1), New York City FC (March 18) and Seattle (March 11).
Scott Caldwell – New England Revolution (@scaldwell15)
Has appeared in each of New England's six matches this season, including earning five starts…garnered start and played all 90 minutes in a 3-0 setback at Chicago (April 15)…netted an assist on Juan Agudelo's fourth-minute tally in a 5-2 triumph past Minnesota (March 25)…posted only shot of the season in a 2-0 victory over Houston (April 8).
Richie Laryea – Orlando City (@RichieLaryea_)
Has started each of the three matches he has appeared in for Orlando City B…owns six shots, including four on net.
Jonathan Lewis – New York City FC (@Jon_lewis710)
Made his professional debut in the MLS playing 11 minutes of reserve duty in a 1-1 draw versus Montreal (March 25)…has battled minor injuries and has not appeared in the last three matches for New York City FC.
Darren Mattocks – Portland Timbers (@darrenmattocks)
Has garnered playing time in five matches for the Timbers and has recorded three shots, including one on goal…Portland is off to a 4-2-1 start through seven games…has played in a season-high 19 minutes in three matches, including in the Timbers' 3-1 win at Philadelphia (April 8) and in 1-0 and 3-2 setbacks, respectively, versus Sporting Kansas City (April 15) and at Columbus (March 25)…recorded a season-best two shots, including one on frame in a 1-0 loss against Sporting Kansas City (April 15)…played four and five minutes, respectively, in reserve duty in 5-1 and 1-0 triumphs past Minnesota (March 3) and Los Angeles (March 12).
Darlington Nagbe – Portland Timbers (@darlingtonnagbe)
Has started and played all 90 minutes in each of the six contests in which he has appeared for Portland this season leading the Timbers to a 4-2-1 start…rated third on the squad in shots on goal (4) and fourth in overall shots (10)…played all 90 minutes and garnered a shot on goal in a 1-0 setback versus Sporting Kansas City (April 15)…registered first goal of the season with a 32nd-minute equalizer in a 3-1 triumph at Philadelphia (April 8)…started and played all 90 minutes for the USMNT in a 6-0 World Cup Qualifying match versus Honduras (March 24) before starting and going 69 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Panama (March 28).
Adam Najem – Philadelphia Union (@adamnajem_)
Made his MLS debut for the Philadelphia Union when he subbed in for Roland Alberg in the 71st minute on April 14…Najem's debut came against the New York City FC squad in which Jonathan Lewis was drafted No. 3 overall in January's MLS SuperDraft…has started each of the three contests he has played in for Bethlehem Steel FC registering four shots, including two on goal.
Kofi Sarkodie – San Jose Earthquakes (@KofiSarkodie8)
Has yet to appear in a match for San Jose this season.
Dillon Serna – Colorado Rapids (@SernaDillon)
Has appeared in three of Colorado's five matches this season in his return from injury in 2016…has not appeared in each of the Rapids' last two contests while battling a leg injury…recorded lone shot of the campaign in a 2-2 draw versus Minnesota (March 18)…tallied 11 and 31 minutes of reserve duty against New England (March 4) and New York Red Bulls (March 11).
Wil Trapp – Columbus Crew (@wil_trapp)
Has started all seven matches for Columbus this season, including playing all 90 minutes in six of those contests…played in his 100th career match, including 97 starts, with Columbus in a 2-1 home triumph past Toronto (April 15)…recorded two shots, including one on goal in a 3-2 victory over Portland (March 25)…recently signed a multi-year contract extension which will keep him with Columbus through the 2020 campaign.
Zarek Valentin – Portland Timbers (@ZarekValentin)
Has started each of the two matches he has appeared in for Portland this season…started and played all 90 minutes in a 4-2 victory over Houston (March 18), including earning an assist on Diego Valeri's 58th-minute tally…played 86 minutes in a start versus Columbus (March 25), a 3-2 setback for Portland.
Ben Zemanski – Portland Timbers (@benzemanski)
Has appeared in one match for Portland, registering 51 minutes of reserve duty in a 1-0 win at Los Angeles (March 12)…has battled a hip injury that has kept him out of the Timbers' recent matches.

DeAndre Yedlin – Newcastle United – FLC (@yedlinny)
Has appeared in 20 matches for Newcastle United this season, including making six starts…Yedlin returned to action after having battled injuries over the past month as a late sub against Leeds (April 14) before earning the start versus Ipswich (April 17)…had not appeared for Newcastle since a 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town on March 4…owns a goal and four assists…an injury prevented him from playing for the USMNT in World Cup Qualifying in March…is expected to soon be at full strength for Newcastle with about a month before training begins for the June for the USMNT World Cup Qualifiers at home against Trinidad & Tobago and an away date against Mexico.
Anthony Ampaipitakwong – Bangkok United – Thai Premier League
Has started and played in four matches for Bangkok United in 2017.
Perry Kitchen – Hearts of Midlothian FC – Scottish Premiership (@perrykitchen23)
Has appeared in 29 matches for Hearts this season, making three starts…owns three assists on 14 shots, including three on goal…started and played all 90 minutes en route to recording a shot in a 0-0 draw versus Kilmarnock (April 14)…posted one shot apiece in setbacks versus St. Johnstone (April 5) and Celtic (April 2)…registered an assist in a 1-1 draw against Inverness CT (Feb. 18).
