Akron, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team is coming off a third place finish at its own Firestone Invitational, and on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10, the Zips will face another challenging field at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate in Bridgeport, W.Va.
The 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Pete Dye Golf Club where Akron placed third last season.
"We are looking forward to this weekend," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "It will be another great test for our team against a great field of competitors. We love the course, and look forward to playing it tomorrow."
The course is ranked No. 45 on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Courses, and No. 9 on Golfweek's Best Modern Courses. The par 72 course stretches 7,353 yards across 250 acres rolling through the Appalachian Mountains with a slope of 144 and a handicap rating of 75.7.
The Zips return the same starting lineup featured in last week's Firestone Invitational, including junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), senior George Baylis (Ascot, England), junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden), and sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio).
The field consists of host West Virginia, Akron, Bowling Green, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, James Madison, Loyola (Md.), Marshall, Ohio, Robert Morris, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Towson, Utah, Winthrop, and Youngstown State.
The Mountaineer Intercollegiate will follow a typical, 54-hole format with 36 holes of continuous play on an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, followed by the final 18 holes in an 8:30 a.m. shotgun on Tuesday.
