BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team held the top offensive team in the Mid-American Conference scoreless in the first half of Sunday's afternoon match before the Falcons posted two second-half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over the Zips at Cochrane Stadium.
Â
"Despite the result, we are proud of the fight in the players today," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "They never quit and gave it everything and that's all we can ask. We will keep pushing forward"
Â
Akron tallied four shots in the contest, led by sophomore Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) with two shots and juniors Rachel Baughman (Alliance, Ohio) and Raechel Eck (Sterling Heights, Mich.) with one shot each, respectively.
Â
In goal for Akron was freshman Amani Jiu (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who made a season-high 10 saves in the contest, while allowing two goals.
Â
Bowling Green has the top offense in the MAC in 2017, and despite allowing 11 first-half shots, the Akron defense and Jiu were phenomenal in the first half to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes of the match.
Â
At the 20:24 mark of the first half, Baughman attempted to get a shot off, but before the ball could reach the goal it was blocked by a BGSU defender.
Â
The Falcons scored their two goals in the 53' and 58' to jump out to a 2-0 lead, respectively.
Â
Akron would not give up after finding themselves trailing late in the game as the Zips continued to push the ball up the field and give themselves a shot at a comeback.
Â
The Zips put together a great attempt to cut the deficit in half in the 56'. Akron pushed the ball into its offensive third and was moving the ball well. Amato then registered her first shot in an attempt to find the back of the net but the ball landed wide hitting the side of the goal.
Â
Amato once again nearly put the Zips on the board at the 80:14 mark of the game, but the ball was just inches high and hit off the crossbar before being cleared out of danger.
Â
Akron was awarded a corner kick in the 84' of the match but could not capitalize. Junior Erica Schrader (Blacklick, Ohio) sent a ball into the box from the corner flag and Eck was able to get a shot off but it was knocked away by a Bowling Green defender.
Â
The Zips return home to FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field on Thursday, Oct. 19 to begin its final stretch of the season with a three-game homestand. Akron meets Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m. for midweek action.
