AKRON – The Akron men's golf team is ready to open the 2016-17 season at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11 hosted by Indiana. The 54-hole event will be played at the 7,155-yard, par-71 Wolf Run Golf Course in Zionsville, Ind., featuring 78 golfers from 14 collegiate programs.
"We are eager to start the season at Wolf Run against some of the best teams in the country," head coach David Trainor said. "Our team is very talented and experienced, returning eight upperclassmen and adding two new players to the roster. We had a highly competitive four days of qualifying to determine the starting lineup, and I think we are ready to go."
Over the last four days, the Zips have played five 18-hole rounds of golf at Firestone Country Club to qualify for the season's first tournament. After the intense pressure cooker of competition, Akron solidified the lineup for the Wolf Run Intercollegiate that includes senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.), sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), defending Mid-American Conference champion junior George Baylis (Ascot, England), and senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France).
The 14-team field includes seven Golfstat Top 100 squads with four teams ranking inside the Top 50, highlighted by No. 2 ranked Illinois, No. 26 Kentucky, No. 37 Louisville, No. 41 Purdue, No. 61 North Texas, No. 70 McNeese St., and No. 97 Central Florida. Also joining the action is host Indiana and IUPUI with five teams from the MAC, including Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Toledo and the Zips.
The first two rounds are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, beginning with a round-one shotgun start at 8 :30 a.m. ET – round two will follow as continuous play. Williams and Grayson are slated to start at hole No. 8 while Appleby and Baylis will tee off on No. 9 and Pfeiffer on No. 10. Fans can follow the action with GolfStat Live Scoring.
The Zips return eight players from last season, led by NCAA Regional participant Baylis and redshirt sophomore Grayson. Baylis finished the 2015-16 campaign as the MAC individual champion with a team-best 73.25 scoring average (36 rounds) while Grayson followed 74.45 average (33 rounds).
Joining Baylis and Grayson are three seniors: Williams, Pfeiffer and Zach Gollwitzer (Baldwin, Mo.), two sophomores: Appleby and Euan Gill (Dingwall, Scotland), and junior Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.). Akron also added two talented freshman to the roster in Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) and Harrison Vonderau (Columbus Station, Ohio).
