CEDARVILLE, Ohio - University of Akron sophomore Joe Rossetti (Stow, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Elizabeth Mosier (Austintown, Ohio) headlined the performances for the Zips' men's and women's cross country teams at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships on Friday, Sept. 30.
Mosier directed the efforts for the Zips' women's squad for the second consecutive race, crossing the line in 22:52.8, good for a 33rd-place showing. As a team, Akron garnered a sixth-place team finish among Division I schools.
"We definitely improved upon our team finish at this meet compared to last year," Akron women's head cross country coach David Gramlich commented. "It was a tough weather day, but our teams managed well. Our top-five scoring runners were four freshman and a sophomore. That bodes well for the future of our program."
For the men, Rossetti turned in the Zips' top performance finishing 46th with a time of 26:18.4, as Akron finished sixth in the overall Division I team standings.
"We had everyone together for this race and were excited to race," said Zips' men's head cross country coach Lee LaBadie. "However, we were way back of our opponents. Our top five were grouped well, but not up near the front. We are a better team than this and have to get better."
Redshirt freshman Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) followed Mosier closely finishing 35th in 22:54.7.
Coming across the line in 23:05 (46th), 23:14.8 (62nd) and 23:19.3 (70th), respectively, to culminate the scoring efforts for Akron women were freshmen Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio), Hannah Pineault (Morgantown, W. Va.) and Vanessa Rivera (Seville, Ohio).
Senior Natalie Zidd (Hinckley, Ohio) and sophomore Tarike Osuobeni (Columbus, Ohio) rounded out the performances for the Zips registering times of 23:41.0 (86th) and 24:12.8 (112th).
Junior Eric McCabe (Hilliard, Ohio) followed Rossetti across the line for the Akron men's squad placing 52nd in 26:24.2. Senior Dan Zupan (Berea, Ohio) redshirt freshman Nick Campbell (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and freshman Samuel Blechman (Bradford Woods, Ohio) rounded out the Zips' scoring efforts recording times of 26:35.4 (63rd), 26:54.7 (84th) and 27:01.3 (92nd), respectively.
Additionally, freshman Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) and junior Garrett Crichlow (Twinsburg, Ohio) crossed the line in 27:12.1 (101st) and 27:44.4 (131st).
The Zips return to action traveling to University Park, Pa., to compete at the Penn State National on Oct. 14.
