AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron cross country men's and women's teams return to action this Friday, Sept. 30, as the Zips travel to Cedarville, Ohio, to compete at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships.
A year ago, the Akron men's squad placed second at the All-Ohio Championships, while the women's team finished eighth. Garrett Crichlow (Twinsburg, Ohio) was the Zips' top-finisher for the men running the 8K course in 24:53.12 to place ninth overall, while Jillian Roth crossed the line first for Akron in the women's race in 22:21.54 (22nd).
The women's championship 6K race is scheduled for 2 p.m., while men's 8K will begin at 2:45 p.m.
Forty-eight schools from Ohio will be competing in the men's and women's fields, including; Akron, Ashland, Baldwin Wallace, Bluffton, Capital, Case Western Reserve, Cedarville, Central State, Cincinnati, Cleveland State (women), Columbus State CC, Cuyahoga CC (women), Dayton, Defiance, Denison, Edison State CC, Findlay, Heidelberg, John Carroll, Kenyon, Lake Erie, Lorain County CC, Lourdes, Malone, Marietta, Miami, Mount Union, Mount Vernon Nazarene, Muskingum, Notre Dame, Oberlin, Ohio, Ohio Christian, Ohio Dominican, Ohio Northern, Ohio State, Ohio Wesleyan, Otterbein, Rio Grande, Shawnee State, Tiffin, Urbana, Walsh, Wilberforce, Wittenberg, Wooster, Wright State, Xavier.
On the men's side, the Zips have gotten strong performances over Akron's first two races this season from senior Dan Zupan (Berea, Ohio), who placed 18th (25:19.10) at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on Sept. 16 after winning the Tommy Evans Invitational on Sept. 9 in 20:05.94.
Junior Eric McCabe (Hilliard, Ohio) was next across the line for Akron at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational in 26:12.20 for 41st place. He was followed among the Zips' top five by freshman Samuel Blechman (Bradford Woods, Ohio), redshirt freshman Nick Campbell (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and freshman Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who finished in 26:27.20 (52nd), 26:27.20 (52nd) and 26:32.60 (56th), respectively
Redshirt sophomore Elizabeth Mosier (Austintown, Ohio) was the Zips' top women's finisher at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on Sept. 16, crossing the line in 22:57.40, a time that was good for 28th place.
Freshmen Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio), Hannah Pineault (Morgantown, W.Va.) and Vanessa Rivera (Seville, Ohio) followed Mosier across the line in 23:06.90, 23:14.60 and 23:23.50 to finish 30th, 33rd and 38th, respectively. Sophomore Tarike Osuobeni (Columbus, Ohio) completed Akron's top five registering a 44th-place effort in 23:37.10.
"I am looking forward to the All-Ohio Championships this Friday," said Zips' head women's cross country coach David Gramlich. "We get our first chance at competing against the other MAC schools in Ohio on a great course. The All-Ohio Championships is such a unique event in college athletics and serves as a turning point in the season for us where we are now turning up the intensity to put on display the quality of our program. I'm confident now that we have a couple of races under our belt we are ready to step forward and show we can the best in Ohio and the Mid-American Conference."
Akron will have one final tune-up before the Mid-American Conference Championships on Oct. 29 as the Zips travel to University Park, Pa., to compete at the Penn State National on Oct. 14.
