Grayson Fires 2-Under 69 Final Round at Bearcat Invitational

Cincinnati, Ohio – Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) continued to lead the Zips' scoring efforts at the Bearcat Invitational, firing a final round 2-under par 69 en route to a 297 (+13) final team score on Tuesday. Grayson tied for 12th overall on the leaderboard with a 216 (+3) 54-hole total, while Akron finished ninth in team scoring, 894 (+42), at Coldstream Country Club, a par-71 course that stretches 7,150-yards.
Starting the final round on hole No. 10, Grayson opened the day with a birdie on the initial hole and followed with a par. He moved back to an even scorecard with a bogey on hole No. 12, and continued to play even-par golf on holes 13-15. He finished the back-9 with an even slate 35 after a second bogey and birdie before the turn.
On the front-9, Grayson birdied two of the first three holes for a 2-under ledger, and cruised to three consecutive par performances. On hole No. 7, Grayson recorded his fifth birdie of the day to move to 3-under par, but a bogey on the final hole moved him back to 2-under par.
Senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) followed with a 224 (+11) tournament total after a final round 75 (+4) performance. He also birdied the first hole (No. 10), but fell behind four strokes after the initial nine holes. During the second half of the round, Gollwitzer played even-par golf collecting five pars, two birdies and two bogeys to finish tied for 36th on the leaderboard.
Senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) and junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) finished the Zips' second event of the season with 227 (+14) and 228 (+15) scores, respectively. Williams posted a 78 (+7) third round tally while Baylis registered a 75 (+4) final round score.Â
Rounding out the Zips' scoring efforts were, sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) and junior Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.) with 231 (+18) and 236 (+23) totals.
Michigan State held on for the team title, edging out Ohio State by four strokes with an 855 (+3) score, while the Buckeyes' Will Grimmer earned medalist honors with a 6-under par 207 tournament total.Â
The Zips will be back in action at their home course Firestone Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4. Akron will host 15 teams for the 2016 Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
