Akron, Ohio – Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) opened the 2016 Firestone Invitational with a first round 8-under par performance, leading the Akron men's golf team to second place with 564 (-12) team score at Firestone Country Club on Monday. The 12-under par team score is the second best in program history behind a pair of 13-under performances in 2006-2007.
Illinois State currently holds a two-stroke advantage over the Zips with a 562 (-14) score while Cincinnati's Austin Squires leads the field by one-stroke with a 69 and 68 - 137 (-7) tally. There is currently a five-way tie for second place, and 16 players own 3-under or better scores.
During the first round, Grayson tied the Zips' all-time low par score record with an 8-under 64 performance, tying Blake Sattler's 8-under par 63 effort at the Comfort Inn Belmont Intercollegiate in 2007-08. Grayson birdied six out of the first nine holes to start the day and recorded par on the remaining three holes. On the back-9, he carded five pars with three birdies and a bogey to finish 8-under. Grayson was 2-over during the final 18 holes, finishing with a 138 (-6) ledger and tied for second overall.

Baylis opened with a 2-over 74 initial 18-hole tally and ended the day at 4-under with a 67-stroke effort. On the final 18-hole round, Baylis recorded an eagle and four birdies to go along with 12 pars and a bogey.
