Akron, Ohio – The 2016 Firestone Invitational came down to the final hole at Firestone Country Club on Tuesday, as Cincinnati edged out Illinois State and Akron. UC claimed the team championship with a 5-under 283 team effort, while the Red Birds finished second with an 853 (-11) score and the Zips claimed third at 856 (-8).
UC's Austin Squires earned medalist honors with three-consecutive rounds in the sixties. He recorded rounds of 69 (-3), 68 (-4), and 68 (-4) for an 11-under par 205 tournament total that included an eagle on hole No. 18 to secure the team championship.
For the Zips, senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) navigated the way through the third round at Firestone Country Club's North Course, firing a 2-under par 70. Pfeiffer played a bogey-free 18-hole round with two birdies and 16 par scores. He finished 20th overall and second in team scoring with an even-par 54-hole score 216 with rounds of 71 (-1), 75 (+3), and 70 (-2).
Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) started the tournament by tying the program's lowest par score with an 8-under par 64 opening round and closed out the event with rounds of 74 (+2) and 75 (+3). Grayson's 3-under par 213 led the Zips' scoring efforts while completing the 54-hole event 12th overall.
Senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) was third in team scoring , finishing tied for 23rd overall with a 217 (+1) tournament total on rounds of 72 (E), 70 (-2), and 75 (+3). Rounding out the scoring were senior Zach Gollwitzer (Baldwin, Mo.) and junior George Baylis (Ascot, England), both finishing 27th overall with 218 (+2) totals. Gollwitzer used rounds of 73 (+1), 73 (+2), and 72 (E) while Baylis carded 74 (+2), 67 (-5), and 77 (+5) scores.
Leading the Zips' individual efforts was junior Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.) with a 230 (+14), while freshmen Harrison Vonderau (Columbus Station, Ohio) and Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) completed their first collegiate tournament with scores of 232 (+16) and 235 (+19), respectively.
The Zips will be back on the course in Bridgeport, W.Va. at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11. The 54-hole event will be played at the Pete Dye Golf Club.
