Cincinnati, Ohio – The Akron men's golf team improved by nine strokes during the second round of the Bearcat Invitational, firing a 293 (+9) score for a 597 (+29) 36-hole total on Monday.
The Zips opened the tournament with a 304 (+20) at the 7,150-yard par-71 Coldstream Country Club as sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) led the way with rounds of 74 (+3) and 73 (+2) for a 26th-best 147 (+5) total. Grayson tallied 21 pars and six birdies.
Seniors J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) and Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) currently rank 35th on the leaderboard with a pair of 149 (+7) scores. Williams recorded rounds of 75 (+4) and 74 (+3) on 21 pars and five birdies. Gollwitzer cut five strokes off his first round score, 77 (+6), carding a 1-over par 72 second round effort. He registered nine pars and four birdies on the final 18 holes to finish the day with 17 pars and seven birdies.
Sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) and defending Mid-American Conference champion junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) tallied scores of 152 (+10) and 153 (+11), respectively, while junior Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.) rounded out the Zips'scoring with a 154 (+12) effort.
Only three strokes separate the team leaders after the first two rounds as Michigan State fired a 2-under par 566 total. Ohio State ranks second with a 1-under 567 and Charleston played two rounds of even-par 568 golf.
