Venckus Named MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND– Akron senior DE Daumantas Venckus (Weston, Fla.) has been tabbed the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. Bowling Green sophomore Rachel Walny (cross country) claimed the female honor.
Venckus helped the UA defense in the 65-38 win at Marshall. He recorded a career-high six tackles, his first fumble recovery, and his first touchdown, a 35-yard fumble return. It was Akron's first defensive touchdown since CB DeAndre Scott's 37-yard interception return at Buffalo (Nov. 11, 2014).
Trailing 21-7 at the time, Venckus' recovery and touchdown changed the Zips' momentum for the rest of the game.
After three games, Venckus has eight tackles, a fumble recovery, and a touchdown.
A graduate student, Venckus is pursuing an M.B.A. in management and sports a 3.706 grade-point average.
The Zips (2-1 overall), under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Terry Bowden, host Appalachian State (1-2 overall) on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 3:30 p.m. at InfoCision Stadium– Summa Field. The American Sports Network and ESPN3 will televise the game.
