AKRON, Ohio – Akron women's golf is set to host two events and compete in two additional Akron-area tournaments, including the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship, as part of the Zips' 2016-17 women's golf schedule, head coach Jenny King announced on Friday.
The fall slate features five events, while the spring schedule sees the Zips competing eight times.
"The 2016-17 schedule will feature some tough competition on challenging golf courses," King said. "We are returning to some of our favorite events, but adding new venues for a broader range of climates and course types. We want to be well-rounded and very prepared for the MAC Championship and postseason play."
The Zips will open the 2016-17 campaign on September 12 in Paducah, Ky., at Drake Creek Golf Club for the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational. Akron will then travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course, hosted by Michigan State (Sept. 24-25).
For the third event of the season (Oct. 3-4), Akron returns to Columbia, Mo., to play The Club at Old Hawthorn for the The Johnie Imes Invitational, hosted by Missouri. Next, the Zips look to defend their 2015-16 the Roseanne Schwartz Invitational win at Avalon Lakes Golf & Country Club in Warren, Ohio (Oct. 10-11).
On Monday, Oct. 24, Akron is scheduled to host the one-day, 36-hole Silver Lake Shoot-Out at Silver Lake Country Club, the future site of the 2016-17 MAC Championships.
"Our fall schedule will be demanding, similar to last season," King said. " We'll play against high-level opponents from larger conferences, like the Big Ten and SEC. It will be a great test and allow our team to learn and grow."
UA will open the spring 2017 schedule with two familiar events, the MAC Match Play Challenge in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. (Feb. 13-14) and the Rio Verde Invitational at White Wing Golf Course in Rio Verde, Ariz. (Feb. 24-26).
The Zips will then make stop in Dallas, Texas, for the Bradley Spring Invite at Brookhavene Country Club (March 13-14) before returning to Florida for the MSU Citrus Challenge at RedTail Golf Club on March 19-21.
Akron adds a new event for 2017, traveling to Williamsburg, Va., for the Kingsmill Intercollegiate at Kingsmill Resort hosted by William & Mary (March 26-28). Next, the Zips will revisit the Indiana Invitational for the first time since the spring 2013 schedule (April 8-9) at Indiana University Golf Club in Bloomington, Ind.
Akron concludes the regular season by hosting a tri-match with Youngstown State and Cleveland State at its home course Portage Country Club in Akron (April 15).
On April 21-13, the Zips return to Silver Lake Country Club for the 2017 MAC Championship.
"We look forward to our spring schedule," King said. "We'll make our escape to some warmer climates with a couple new destinations that should challenge us to get our games in order for the end of April. We're also excited to finish the season in the Akron area."
The Zips return five letterwinners for the 2016-17 season, led by sophomore Danielle Nicholson (Geveva, Ohio), who won the 2016 Individual MAC Championship. Akron also returns senior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico), juniors Mallory Etcheberry (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) as well as sophomore Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio).
Joining the Zips for the 2016-17 campaign will be freshman Allyson Wentworth from Stewartsville, N.J.
