Akron, Ohio – For the third consecutive year, Zips' golfer Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) was named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.
"Ale works very hard in the classroom," Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "It is no surprise to me that she received this honor for the third time. She sets a great example to our other student-athletes on how to grind it out in the classroom!"
A total of 828 women's collegiate golfers were recognized with this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.
Velasco-Villanueva, a corporate finance major, maintains a team-high 3.589 GPA while making two appearances on the Dean's List. This year, she also received her first All-Academic Mid-American Conference honor.
Last season as a junior, Velasco-Villanueva appeared in all of the Zips' 10 events, posting an 81.73 scoring average over 26 rounds. She recorded a season-low and career-best 74 (+2) at the MAC Fall Preview and won 2-of-3 head-to-head matches at the MAC Match Play Challenge. She posted winning scores of 4&2 and 1-up before falling 1-down in the final round.
