Zips Move Up, Nicholson Continues to Lead MAC Championship

Noblesville, Ind. – The Akron Zips women's golf team moved up to fifth overall after 36-holes of the Mid-American Conference Championship at the Purgatory Golf Club. The Zips fired a 302 (+14) team score while freshman Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) carded a 1-under 71 to remain at the top of the leaderboard.
"The first and second rounds were fairly consistent," Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "We have to keep it steady yet again tomorrow."
Kent State turned a four-stroke deficit into a three-stroke advantage over the 10-team field with team-low 285 (-3) second round score. The Golden Flashes are in first place heading into the final round with a 579 (+3) 36-hole total, while Toledo is second with a 582 (+6) and Ohio climbed four places to third overall with a 593 (+17) two-day total.
"Danielle's game is in a good place," King said. "She is very confident, and I know she will give it her best effort for the final round."
Nicholson moved to sole possession of first place on the players' leaderboard with a two-stroke lead at 4-under 140, while Ohio's Emily Hughes and Toledo's Pimchanok Kawil are tied for second place at 142 (-2).
Nicholson started the second round the same way as the first, recording birdie on the first hole. She followed with five holes of even-par play until she earned a second birdie on the par-3, 136-yard seventh hole. Nicholson finished the initial nine holes with two pars for a 2-under 34.
On the back-9, Nicholson moved to 3-under after a birdie on the 356-yard, par-4 10th hole and followed with three-consecutive pars. Nicholson ended the round with two pars and a pair of bogeys to remain 1-under for the lead.
Senior Frida Fougberg (Partille, Sweden) followed in team scoring, climbing 16 spots on the leaderboard with a 74 (+2) second round effort. Fougberg moved from 40th overall to 24th with a two-day tally of 152 (+8) strokes. During the second round, she collected 10 pars and three birdies with five bogeys.
Also climbing the leaderboard was freshman Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio). Dull used a 76 (+4) to move up 11 spots form 40th to 31st overall with a 154 (+10) tournament total. Dull finished with 14 pars and four bogeys.
"Frida performed great on the back-9 and finished strong, while Makayla really gave our team what we needed at the end," King said.
Rounding out the Zips' scoring and tied for 41st overall are junior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) and sophomore Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) with 158 (+14) scores. Velasco-Villanueva recorded an 81 (+9) second round with nine pars while Her tallied an 82 (+10) with six pars and two birdies.
Sunday's final round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. ET start. The Zips begin teeing off at 9:40 a.m. and conclude at 10:20 a.m. Velasco-Villanueva will open the round followed by Her (9:50 a.m.), Dull (10 a.m.), Fougberg (10:10 a.m.), and Nicholson (10:20 a.m.).
