AKRON, Ohio – The Akron women's golf team travels to Noblesville, Ind., for the 2016 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship at the par-72 Purgatory Golf Club on April 22-24.
Eastern Michigan hosts this year's championship event, which is set for three rounds beginning on Friday. The Zips will take the course starting at 9:40 a.m. ET. Rounds two and three are set for 8 a.m. ET starts on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Fans can follow all the action live via GolfStat Live Scoring.
"The team is prepared and confident heading into the MAC Championship," Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "We have worked very hard over the last two weeks, and the team is excited and ready to compete."
The Zips played the 6,191-yard Purgatory course earlier this season at the MAC Fall Preview. Akron placed fourth overall (912, +48), while senior Frida Fougberg (Partille, Sweden) earned medalist honors and set Akron's single round record. Fougberg posted a career-best 3-under par 69 performance en route to a 220 (+5) tournament tally.
The Zips will be making their eighth appearance at the MAC Championship, the youngest overall program in the league. In the seven previous appearances, Akron has reached the Top 5 five times, including a program-best tie for third place in 2009.
The Zips look to improve on its eighth-place showing at last year's event with the starting five of freshman Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio), Fougberg, sophomore Pader Her (Holt, Mich.), freshman Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio), and junior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico).
"If we trust in our preparation, we will be right in the thick of things by the end of the weekend," King said.
Akron enters this year's championship event following a seventh-place finish at the Murray State Jan Weaver Invitational on April 8-9. Nicholson and Fougberg led the way for the Zips, tying for eighth overall while Her and Dull followed with a tie for 32nd place.
