Nicholson, Zips Lead UC Bearcat Spring Classic after Opening Round

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. – Freshman Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) sits on top of the leaderboard and the Akron Zips women's golf team leads the 17-team field of the UC Bearcat Spring Classic after opening round play. Nicholson, tied for first place, fired a 1-over par 73 at Mission Inn Resort and Country Club's El Campeon Golf Course to lead the Zips to a one-stroke lead with a 313 (+25) team score.
Three of the Zips top four scorers finished in the Top 10 on the leaderboard. Nicholson leads with a first place 73 (+1) showing, collecting 10 pars and four birdies. Sophomore Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) followed with a 77 (+5) opening round, which ranks fifth overall, recording 12 pars and a birdie. Senior Frida Fougberg (Partille, Sweden) carded an eighth-best 78 (+6) finish with nine pars and two birdies.
Freshman Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio), and junior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) round out Akron's team scoring with 85 (+13) and 86 (+14), respectively. In addition, senior Lesli Stolly (Lima, Ohio) recorded an 94 (+22) as an individual.
Tournament hosts, Cincinnati, trail the Zips by one-stroke 314 (+26) while Seminole State is third with 321 (+33) score. Individually, Oklamoma City's Anna Mikish is tied for first with Nicholson, and Seminole State's Cynthia Bounleutay is third with a 75 (+3) effort.
The 54-hole event continues on Saturday with a shotgun start, and Akron teeing off from holes 1-4 at 8 a.m. ET. Fans can follow the action with live scoring at BirdieFire.com.
