Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. – The University of Akron women's golf team wrapped up play at the RedTail Golf Club and will enter its second tournament of the spring trip, the UC Bearcat Spring Classic hosted by the University of Cincinnati. The three-day event will begin on Friday, March 25 and conclude on Sunday, March 27.
"We are excited about this event," head coach Jenny King said. "The golf course has a lot of history, and we are looking forward to playing it in tournament mode."
The Zips will play the 54-hole tournament at Mission Inn Resort and Country Club's El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The El Campeon is one of the South's oldest golf courses and blends unusual Central Florida elevation changes of more than 85 feet with features of traditional golf design, including spectacular rolling fairways and undulating greens. The par 72 course measures 6,195 yards. El Campeon's signature hole is the par 5, 17th hole - which features a long double dogleg with more obstacles than some entire courses.
Akron is the lone Mid-American Conference member to enter the 17-team field. The other competitors include: Cincinnati (hosts), Albany, Dartmouth, Florida Southern, Georgia Southern, Grand Canyon, High Point, Hofstra, Jacksonville, Marshall, McNeese State, Morehead State, Seminole State, Nova Southeastern, Oklahoma City, and Quinnipiac.
The 54-hole event will span three-days with Akron's first round tee times starting at 8:50 a.m. ET off hole No. 1. Fans can follow the action with live scoring at BirdieFire.com.
The Zips' starting five includes Frida Fougberg (Partille, Sweden), Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio), Pader Her (Holt, Mich.), Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio), and Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico). In addition, senior Lesli Stolly (Lima, Ohio) will be competing as an individual.
"We ended the Citrus Spring Challenge on positive note," King said. "I think the team is focused and ready to keep the momentum rolling."
Akron is coming off a 14th place finish with a 931 (+67) 54-hole total, however, the Zips fired a second-best final round team score of 296 (+8) to move up two spots.
Nicholson led Akron's scoring efforts, finishing 18th overall with a 226 (+10) on rounds of 73, 79, and 74. Her was second in scoring for the Zips after registering a 1-under par 71 final round and moving up 36 spots on the leaderboard to finish 39th overall (80, 80, 71 – 231 (+15)).
Fougberg led Akron through a tough second round with a team-low 77 (+5) and carded a 76 (+4) final round score to finish 57th overall with 234 (+18) strokes while Velasco-Villanueva improved by 11 strokes over the final two rounds, ending with a 75 (+3) and 243 (+27) tournament total.
Dull rounded out the team scoring with rounds of 81 (+9), 87 (+15), and 79 (+7) for a 249 (+33) while Stolly, playing as an individual, carded scores of 81 (+9), 95 (+23), and 82 (+10) for a 258 (+42) tournament total.
The women's golf team returns to action on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, at Miller Memorial Golf Course for the Murray State Invitational Miller in Murray, Ky.
