AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron softball team and head coach Julie Jones announced the addition of student-athlete Kayla Kmett to the 2017-18 signing class on Tuesday.
Kmett will be joining the incoming class made up of Mikayla Newland (Chillicothe, Ohio) and Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio).
Kmett, a pitcher from Jserra Catholic High School, was named to the first team All-Trinity league, named the Jserra Catholic player of the year, and a scholar-athlete a season ago as a junior. Inside the circle, Kmett has pitched over 228 innings work and has struck out 186 batters in her three-year career. She is third on the Jserra all-time strikeout list. At the plate, Kmett has posted a career batting average of .343 on the strength of 74 hits, 13 doubles, eight triples, two home runs and 50 runs batted in.
"We are excited to add Kayla to our exciting pitching staff. She brings a ton of experience against high-level competition and has proven successful in the circle and even more successful in the classroom," said Jones. "She is smart, she will be a great teammate, and she has the ability to keep batters off balance, which is the key to success. She will be a nice compliment to what we already have and we are excited to see what she can do at the next level."
