Akron Softball Announces 2017 Schedule

AKRON, Ohio – On Thursday, Akron softball head coach Julie Jones announced the Zips' 2017 schedule, one that includes six tournaments, four series against non-conference opponents, and eight Mid-American Conference series with four at home at Lee Jackson Field.
"We are looking forward to our 2017 schedule returning to familiar venues, but finding some new opponents during each trip. I like the balance of our schedule and feel like we will go into the contests, particularly the MAC portion, as an underdog or unknown with a new look to our pitching staff," said Jones. "That is fun position to be in as we look to get solid experience as we head to the MAC and hopefully beyond."
The 2017 softball campaign begins with five tournaments made up of 22 contests throughout February and the first two weeks of March. The first pitch of the 2017 season will be thrown at the Stetson University tournament (Feb. 10-12) in Deland, Fla.
Akron travels to Montgomery, Ala., on Feb. 17-19, to take part in the Alabama State tournament.
The Zips head back to Florida, on Feb. 25-26, to participate in the Jacksonville State tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.
Akron is scheduled to compete at the Kennesaw State tournament (March 4-5) in Kennesaw, Ga., for their fourth tournament of the season.
UA's fifth tournament of the season is located Fairfax, Va., when it plays in the George Mason Invitational (March 11-12).
Akron completes tournament action on March 18, as the Zips travel to Morehead, Ky., for a one-day round robin tournament.
MAC play opens of the road for the Zips in 2017 with a trip to DeKalb, Ill., for a three-game series with the Huskies (March 24-25).
The Zips return to Lee Jackson field for the 2017 home opener on March 28 with a twinbill against Cleveland State.
A three-game conference series with Eastern Michigan is scheduled for March 31 and April 1 in Ypsilanti, Mich.
UA is back at Lee Jackson field for a five games in a span of five days. The Zips host Buffalo in double-header action on April 4, before welcoming Central Michigan for a three-game set (April 7-8).
The Zips travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for a game with the Bulls on April 12 to close out the season series between the two schools.
Eight home contests await the Zips between April 14-22. From April 14-15, Ohio comes to Akron for a three-game series, followed by a twinbill with Dayton (April 19).
Akron closes out the home slate of the schedule in a three-game series versus cross-town rival Kent State on April 21-22 as part of the Crystal Clinic Orthopedic Centers Wagon Wheel Challenge.
On April 26, the Zips travel to Niagara, N.Y., to take on Niagara for two games.
The Zips return to league play with a three-game series against Bowling Green. The two squads are set to meet on April 28 for one contest, followed by a twinbill on April 29.
Akron's final non-conference games are set for May 2, when the Zips face-off against Youngstown State in double-header action.
The 2017 regular season comes to a close on the first weekend of May at Miami University. The Zips and RedHawks will go head-to-head on May 5 for one game, before playing a pair of contests on May 6.
The 2017 MAC Tournament will be held May 10-13 at Akron's Firestone Stadium.
All home games are played on the University of Akron's campus at Lee Jackson Field.
